Champions League 2005-2006 group stage · 2005-09-13 Referee: Iouri Baskakov

Concentrated Baskakov creates good match conditions

Not much to do

In the first half PSV had the upper hand. Vennegoor of Hesselink scored with a header after 30 minutes. It was an interesting match. Both teams were busy playing football. Baskakov was not much noted on the field. Nobody was questioning his decisions, so he refereed well.

Some more bravery is welcome

In the second half Schalke were on the offensive. The best opportunities were for PSV though. Baskakov's refereeing may have shown some minor flaws. His yellow card for Schalke player Rafinha should not have been given. Overall it was a friendly encounter, where no harsh fouls were made. On a few occasions when a foul was committed, Baskakov could have chosen to let play continue, instead of deciding for free kicks. Though both teams were playing attacking football, no team suffered from his strict refereeing, so no team was favoured. In the future it would be nice to see Baskakov acting with a little bit more bravery.
