Alemannia Aachen 0 - 4 Bayern Munich
DFB Cup 1/4 finals · 2011-01-26 Referee: Michael Weiner

THE FAILED ATTEMPT TO BRING DOWN THE GIANT

It never really looked like a surprise...

Alemannia Aachen was never really ready to challenge the Van-Gaal-team seriously. The kept away too far from the Bayern players and let Gomez uncovered after 20 minutes within less than thirty feet distance to the goal: 0-1. After that I never had the feeling that Munich would give that match away again. Their backline looked vulnerable in some parts of the match, but Aachen lacked the courage and the stamina to "go for gold". Two shots on the goal is to little to win against Bayern Munich.

The referee

Michael Weiner is quite an experienced referee in Germany who has a little dignified and "wise" look due to his greyish hair. He had little to do on the night as the match was fair, but two to three issues shadowed his performance (including his team) to me. Offside was a problem for the assistant on the far side in both halfs - I know it is very difficult, but he was wrong quite a lot of times (by a matter of inches of course).

Two penalty appeals

Two penalty appeals - one on each side - need considering: The tackling on Altintop in the box was one of the most courageous deeds by the Aachen defense in the whole match, but I guess it was okay to give corner instead of penalty. On Benjamin Auer, there was a foul and more than an accidential contact by Luis Gustavo - so a crucial decision which would have made the match quite different. He touched the foot, the fall didn't look spectacular and was probably quite difficult to spot for the ref. It was not as clear as it looked in slo-mo, but a mistake remains a mistake.

Good on rule twelve

Weiner didn't have much to do in judging challenges and fouls according to rule twelve. One yellow was sufficient in the whole match which shows were Aachens problem lied. They weren't ready for this great mission yet to bring down the Goliath alias "the star from the south".
