Vendetta

Vicious

Among the 6 cards, one was a red for Dutch midfielder Cocu who took revenge with a body check after his team mate Van der Vaart was dealt a vicious kick. Referee Hanascek who apparantly didn't see it happen, was notified by his linesman. This situation was characteristic for the game in which Hanascek wasn't able to control the players nor anticipate on what was likely to happen.

intentions

As opposed to Andorra's 1 shot and only 12% possession, Holland's 32 shots and 84% possession were a clear indication that they played to score as many goals as possible. Andorra's intentions turned out to be not to play a game, but to stop the Dutch at all costs. A difficult match for referee Hanascek, whose policy seemd to be to penalize only after the fact and not to try to stop ongoing vendettas like the one between Dutch forward Van Nistelrooy and Andorra captain Antoni Lima. The latter, not only frustrated by the Dutch player's ability to outplay him but also by scoring an own goal in the first half.
