We replayed some scenes from the match and I think Olegario was right with these two decisions. There was an elbow in the Ajax goalie's face and the off-side situation could have gone either way (and then it isn't off-side).
I think Benquerenca whistled a little too often though, sometimes he could have turned a blind eye, but didn't - maybe because he was afraid of the match getting out of hand.
But this is my point: no one seems to agree on Benquerenca. There's always controversy. Some think he's great, others start throwing things at their tv sets or yell abuse at him in the stadium, which was what substitute player Mignot did. The Frenchman stood behind the touch line yelling, pointing at a watch he wasn't wearing. And when Benquerenca booked him, Mignot yelled some more and got sent off.
Only Benquerenca ......
Maybe Benquerenca's style has got something to do with all this. The way he points his finger, the way he shows a card: arm straight in the air his back slightly curved backwards, as if taking part in a ballet or some kind of dancing on ice pageant.
Ajax player Ooijer got a direct red for pulling down a player on his way to the goal and Auxerre forward Oliech was shown a second yellow for a hand of God goal. All good decisions. Ajax easily won the first half, I have no idea who won the second, perhaps it was Olegario Benquerenca.
