I was watching him in, I believe, his first match in the CL a few years ago when he finished a match while the ball entered an empty goal. And I was wondering how a referee like that got a chance in such a prestigious competition. A few months later he also was refereeing a play-off between Croatia u-21 and Serbia, and again he was the worst man on the field. After all these years I thought he would have become a better referee, but none of that, he just made progress to the Elite category, but his refereeing stayed on the same level as when I first saw him.
About the match just one thing: when Tottenham scored their second goal, Cole played with his hand which was pretty obvious, but Laurent nor his assistant and brother Stephane nor his additional assistant Fautrel didn't see anything. Later in the match Duhamel again didn't see two handballs. Though his foul recognition was o.k. , his disciplinary measure was bad.
These guys have wonderful ideas about how to improve refereeing, so now we get a whole bus of referees, who don't have any responsibility. The additional assistants are there to help the referee in situations in the box and in all other situation where they can see better what happened then the referee. In many matches I watched in the last year of Europa League they made the match harder for the referee because of their decisions (wrong or right). What is their preparation for a match and how can they be useful? What do referees tell them before a match? How far can they go in suggesting to the referees what happened? Or are they in the field just for the experiment to oppose those of the football population who support video technology?
Blatter once said that he opposed technology in football because he wanted that there woud be the same rules in all parts of the world. Technology couldn't be used in every league on the planet, but the idea of six referees on all levels is feasible. Yes, but just in the Cl and Europa League, why not then in the, say, the Croatian third league, in English Sunday morning matches or in youth matches in Spain?
