Armenia 0 - 1 Netherlands
WC 2006 qualifiers - Europe · 2005-09-03 Referee: Stuart Dougal

Dougal should not try Armenian cognac again

Clear goal denied

In the first half he denied the Dutch a clear goal when their striker Kuyt pushed the ball over the line. This was even visible on the stands were i was watching the game with a bottle of brandy at hand. Holland had over 70 percent of possesion, but in order to advance they had to keep the pace up. Dougal was slowing the game down by punishing almost all body contact. These were decisions one would hardly expect of a Scottish referee.

Game fizzled out

In the second half van Nistelrooy scored a goal for the Dutch after an assist from Vennegoor of Hesseling. Dougal booked two Dutch players. The last booking (Jan Kromkamp) was questionable. It seemed to me that Dougal's calls were mostly in favour of the Armenian team who were playing for time and were mostly defending. It was bad for the game. It was hard to watch. The game fizzled out.
