North Korean born Kim Yong-Sik became the first Korean FIFA referee. He was active internationally from 1951 until the end of 1954.

Kim's passion for football resulted in his selection for Japan to compete at the Berlin Olympic Games of 1936. For Korea he played at the 1948 Olympic Games in London as a player/coach. As a coach he was active at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland loosing 9-0 against Ferenc Puskas' Hungary.

He became Korea's first officially-recognized international referee in 1951 and also was vice president of the Korean FA from 1962 till 1965.

Following his death in 1985, Kim was posthumously awarded the Order of Sports Merit medal. In 2005 Kim was placed inside the Korean Football Hall of Fame in recognition of the massive influence he had on the development of football on the Korean peninsula throughout his life.
