As so many referees, Walter Eschweiler had ambitions as a player but had to quit after suffering an injury. The diplomat, game show personality, miss Germany pageant jury member and international referee is a well known person in Germany.

career
Walter Eschweiler started as a referee in 1963 and has taken charge of 256 or 183 or 298 (depends on the source) matches between 1965 and 1986.
From 1971 on he officiated in 155 international matches (75 for the European Cup). Highlights were the 1980 Super Cup, the 1981 UEFA Cup (2nd leg) final and the European Cup winners Cup final. He led 6 matches in the European Championships and matches in the !974-1978 and 1982 World Cup.
In the 1974 World Cup, he was a linesman in two matches.

real life
A diplomat who acted as a liaison for foreign dignitaries, Eschweiler after his retirement became a sort of diplomat for sports.
He still referees matches between politicians.
