Born in Timisoara, Romania, Abraham Klein is probably Israel's most important referee to date. Klein was active at the World Cups of 1970, 1978 and 1982. In every world Cup Klein had at least one great match to officiate.

1970 Mexico

England versus Brazil: Klein tried unsuccessfully to end the game, but players didn't hear the whistle. "It was such a great game I let it continue for a few minutes".

1978 Argentina

Argentina versus Italy: before half-time Klein denied Argentina a penalty kick: "At half-time, as I walked into the tunnel, I was booed at by 80,000 people."
Klein also refereed the third place match. It is often regarded he was denied the final, because of possible politcal links between the Netherlands and Israel.

1982 Spain

Italy versus Brazil in which Paolo Rossi scored a hat-trick. Klein was a linesman in the final.
