William Pierce-Dix was active in football around the 1880s. He was a secretary of the Sheffield FA (and strongly against professional football) and a referee of for instance the 1881 FA Cup final
Our correspondent Mike who found Pierce-Dix's picture writes: "This illustration is from a woodburytype illustration ca 1879 which was I believe issued attached to the centre of the cover page of a short-lived magazine called The Cricket and Football Times, Bicycling and Athletics Journal which ceased publication in 1880 after about 110 issues. The illustration is stuck to a card supplied by the magazine price sixpence ha'penny per dozen.
