DIE SCHWARZE DIVA
- A Peruvian player called Velásquez, shaped like an oran utang according to Eschweiler - bumped into him with his shoulder during the 1982 World Cup match Italy - Peru. The German referee fell backwards causing his cards and whistle to fly through the air. Eschweiler broke a tooth but went on to lead the match. During the break he got a phone call from the German foreign secretary, who was his boss.
- Eschweiler used to judge in a game show called "Spiel ohne Grenze" in the 60's and 70's. In the show teams from German towns had to compete by climbing up slippery slopes or by trying to push each other into the water.
- Once when Italian player Bruno Conti made a spectacular dive in the French penalty box Eschweiler told him: Bruno, get up please, the Holy Father is watching, your soul is in danger". According to Eschweiler Conti immediately ran off and never complained.
