Ubaldo Antenor Aquino Valenzano was born in General Elizardo Aquino, San Pedro, Paraguay (yes that is the name of a town), on May 5th 1958. Married, he has got three children and he´s a dentist. Aquino, who started refereeing in 1989 , became a FIFA referee in 1993.

n 1997, Aquino refereed in FIFA WC U-17 in Malasia. Two years later, he participated in the FIFA Confederations Cup in Mexico, and the 1999 Copa America, which was held in his country. Here, he took charge of a game between Argentina and Colombia, where he conceded 5 penalties (a record in the tournament´s history). In 2001, he refereed in the Copa America in Colombia, and took charge of the final Colombian - Mexico.

The most important tournament for Aquino must have been the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals where he took charge of two games: Germany-Saudi Arabia and Senegal-Sweden.

After the World Cup in 2003 Aquino retired. He is remembered as a severe, and a bit theatrical, referee. Nowadays (2008) he is the Chief of the Referee Staff in Paraguayan Football Association.

  • He conceded 5 penalties in the 1999 Copa America 1st stage match between Argentina and Colombia. Three of them were shot by Argentinian Martin Palermo. He missed twice and his third shot was stopped by the goalie. The Colombians actually managed to get one in, the other one was stopped as well.
