But

The Peruvians, 2 goals behind, equalized and the match went into extra-time. Peru scored their 4th goal in the last minute. After the match the Austrians protested, according to them the Peruvians had manhandled them and spectators, one even had a revolver, had entered the field. FIFA ordered the game replayed behind closed doors, but the whole of the Peruvian Olympic team withdrew in protest; the game was awarded to Austria.

At home in Lima crowds tore down an Olympic flag and, blaming the Germans, went to the German Consulate to throw stones. At Lima's seaport, workmen on the docks refused to load two German vessels.
