The renowned Tom "Tiny" Wharton was the referee for the 1962 Cup-Winners Cup Final between Fiorentina and Atletico Madrid at Hampden.

and

Wharton refereed 16 internationals and numerous domestic finals. He died in 2005 aged 77.

observation

Brian Wilson observed : Wharton's refereeing style was unflappable. He invariably addressed the players with "Mister" prefixed to their surnames and expected the same in return. While remarkably nimble for a man of his stature, he tended to referee from a midfield vantage point. However, in an age before instant replays and interminable analysis, his physical presence [6 ft 4 in and bulk to match] and humour helped him to command respect from the players. Chairman of the SFA supervisors committee for 15 years and a member of FIFA's referee committee from 1981 to 2000, he was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit in Gold, and, in 1990, an OBE for services to sport. In his later role as a deputy chairman of the Football Trust (1990-2000) - an under-recognised body which largely funded the reconstruction of Britain's football stadia out of pools revenue - Wharton became well known to virtually every club in the country. His presence was always welcome, not only on account of his gentlemanly manner, but also because he usually arrived with a cheque.
