In the early years there were two umpires (representing each team) and a referee. The umpires were the ones on the field. Theodore Lloyd was a player from Chrystal Palace and the referee of England - Scotland in 1873. The umpires were Charles Alcock (E) and Archibald Rae (S).
The fact that we only list referees has to do with the way our database is built. We do understand that not naming the umpires from matches form the 19th century is not correct.
