When Siegrfried Kirschen took charge of his first international matches he came from a country called the DDR, the German Democratic Republic. He was quite successful, having officiated at the 1986 and 1988 World Cup and at the 1992 European Championships.

The former referee, who is still active as a president of his local football association
took charge of matches in the DDR Oberliga as well as the Bundesliga.

In 2006 it became known that Kirschen had been working for the Stasi (secret police), giving them information, but remember that there must be thousands who did the same even if they didn't want to.

SIEGRFRIED KIRSCHEN

  • It was the Frankfurter Allgemeine that came with the news about Siegfried Kirscher's Stasi past. Apprently he had been a so called "Inoffizieller Mitarbeiter" - an unofficial employee - from 1962 till 1982. Kirscher denies the allegations. Later on he stated that he did talk with the Ministry of Security, but about unimportant issues. he said he never spied on anyone nor did he do anything that he is accused of. The whole discussion got stuck in a forest of acronyms, trying to prove that one Stasi employee was not nearly as bad as the other.
