Shamsul Maidin
Born: 1966-04-16
Intl. since: 1996-01-01
Hometown: Singapore
Country: Singapore
Speaks: Malay, English
Occupation: Referee department executive
Hobbies: Football

Considering the size of his native country it's a bit of a miracle Shamsul Maidin was one of the 32 referees chosen for the 2006 World Cup, where he officiated three matches in the first round. And he wasn't even the first Singapore ref to officiate at the World Cup, that was George Suppiah.

World

Considering the size of his country it's probably no wonder this father of four became an international referee quite soon in 1996 at the age of 30. Ever since he must have seen a lot of the world having refereed not only in the Asian cup, but also in the African Cup, the Confederation's Cup of Nations 2006 and in World Cup qualifiers.

Year

Considering the size of his country it's maybe a bit strange he wasn't voted Singapore's referee-of-the-year every year, but only a couple of times.

World Cup

The whole of Singapore was very disappointed Maidin did not get to the second round of the World Cup. You could argue that A Singaporean will never reach the second round, but FIFA had a point: Maidin failed to send off Trinidad and Tobego player John Avery for a straight legged assault, twice. He did send him off eventually after two cautions.

Bad luck

The Asian referee of the year 2005 and 2006, had some bad luck in 2007 when he sustained a severe tear to the meniscus of his left knee while training in preparation for his 4th Asia Cup.

retirement

Although not yet 45, Shamsul Maidin gave up his international career at the end of 2007. He then became National Referee Coordinator.

instructor

In 2008 FIFA announced that Shamsul Maidin was the first referee from Southeast Asia to work as referee instructor with FiFA.
