Probably the greatest Ethiopian referee ever, Sayoum Tarekegn is the only one from his country to have taken charge of a match in a World Cup finals (1970). He was also active at two Olympic tournaments.

  • "Who does the little negro think he is?", infamous words blurted out by Nicolò Carosio, the famous Italian radio and television reporter, when he thought Tarekegn, then linesman, made a mistake in the 1970 World Cup match Italy-Israel.
    A diplomatic row between Ethiopia and Italy was the result and Carosio was fired.
