When Sam Spillane travelled to Cardiff to take charge of the Euro Cup Nations tie Wales - Hungary, it was the first time he boarded a plane.
Born and reared in Cork, Spillane played school football but gradually turned to refereeing helping out taking charge of matches. In 1961 he took charge of the FAI Cup final and received his FIFA badge.
Spillane has been active in football for over 52 years officiating 6 FAI Cup finals, three in the centre and three running the line.
