RECORD

  • Ronan Leaustic was the referee in the 2001 World Cup qualifier Australia - American Samoa that ended in 31 - 0 with a record breaking 13 goals by Archie Thompson (he even had one goal canceled). David Zdrilic scored 8, normally a record as well. The Australian keeper didn't touch the ball until the 86th minute.
Because of a new FIFA ruling that American Samoan players had to be from American Samoa (and not from neighbouring Samoa), they were robbed of 19 of their 20-man senior squad. And since their U-20 squad were involved in end-of-term exams they could not play either.
The only member of the original squad with the necessary US passport was the goalie.
Oddly enough the 13-goal quadruple hat-trick striker Thompson is not even Australian. His father is from New Zealand and his mother from Papua New Guinea.
After many protest about not getting any competition, Australia went to play in the Asian League
