Richard Phillip Gregson was active in the 19th century.
Umpires vs refs
Gregson's name shows up in more international games (British Home Championship matches) but as an Umpire. The first football matches were played without officials, then two umpires were introduced, one provided by each team. In the 1880s, a referee was added. The referee did not enter the field, he kept time and umpires could ask him to settle a dispute (hence the name "referee"). In the 1890s, the referee moved on to the field and the umpires became linesmen.
The fact that we list the referee of a match from, say 1880, is actually wrong, we should list them all three, ref and umpires.
