Bio
Pieter Vink
Born: 1967-03-13
Intl. since: 2004-01-01
Hometown: Noordwijkerhout
Country: Netherlands
Speaks: Dutch, English
Occupation: Police man
Hobbies: Golf, Refereeing

Vink started as a referee in 1987 and reached the top in the Netherlands in 2001.
A police officer for almost 20 years but now a full-time referee, Vink received his FIFA badge in 2004 and was added to the UEFA list of 24 elite refs in June 2007. At that time the youngest elite referee in Europe.

2004

Vink has been at it in the UEFA cup since 2004.
From then on his career went smoothly.
In 2005 he already officiated the final of the U-19 Euro championships.
From 2006 on the Dutchman was selected for Champions League matches as well.

2007

In 2007 Vink was chosen by the FA to lead the first match in the new Wembley stadium. It was an u21 match between the national teams of England and Italy, 3-3.

2008

From 2007 Vink was asked to referee in EURO 2008 qualifiers matches, receiving a great reward afterwards when he got elected for EURO 2008 over his more experienced country man Braamhaar.
Of course Vink hopes to reach the final, but thinking of every game being a final in itself, is satisfied when he is given the opportunity to lead two great games in EURO 2008.

Which was what happened, but Vink did not make a good impression on WorldReferee.com contributors, ending up one but last in the EURO 2008 list with a 6,2 average.

2010

Vink was on the 54 member shortlist of candidates for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but was very disappointed not to be on the 38 provisional list. In an interview Vink said - quite arrogantly - he did not understand why somebody from the Seychelles (he was taking about Eddy Maillet) was on the list and he wasn't.

2010 wasn't a good year for Vink as a referee. He was taken off Eredivisie matches for a while after a grave mistake he made in a pivotal match and since the Dutch FA took him off the list, Vink's name did not come up for the Champions League either.

Perhaps a little disappointed Vink decided to retire internationally from January 2011.

Did you know
PIETER VINK

  • Pieter Vink would like to think of himself as "an honest man holding strong opinions". In a 2008 television interview he showed himself being humble and friendly. Not so on the field, though, where he seems arrogant and a bit pedantic, according to some.
  • He thinks electronic aids should be applied as long as they don't make a match resemble an American football match, which can last up to 4 hours.
  • No longer an international referee in 2011, still Vink was invited to take charge of the match Litex vs Levski in the Bulgarian competition. A notoriously corrupt competition which can use a policeman like Vink.
  • In 2007, Pieter Vink officiated the super cup between Dynamo Kiev and Shaktar Donetsz (2-2) in the Ukraine, an important match traditionally refereed by a foreigner.
  • He tried to wave it off as unimportant but it must have come as a shock when in 2007 Pieter Vink's 7 year old daughter found a threatening note concerning his refereeing between the sandwiches she took with her to school. In a (Dutch) interview with Sportweek, Vink asked commentators to be more careful with heavy statements against referees, often these comments result in threats against the referee's children, wives, parents, etc.
  • As a professional referee Vink earns between 60 and 80 thousand euros, not anywhere near as much as some of the players, but much more than he did as a police officer.
  • Vink says he was amazed at the fact that most players don't even know the rules of the game.
  • In 2010, Pier Vink was on the list for the VVD (liberal right-wing party) in his town Noordwijkerhout. He didn't make it, because he was the 9th on the list and only 6 went in the council.
  • In april 2010 Vink was suspended for the last 2 matches in the Dutch Eredivisie, because he missed a clear hands ball during an important AZ-Twente match. Kesler, the president of the Dutch football association (KNVB) told reporters you could see that hands ball even from the Afsluitdijk (that's a big dike somewhere in the middle of Holland). Consequently he was also put off the UEFA list, and was lost for a possible Europa League semi-final.
  • Bad news about Pieter Vink continued when in August 2010 he flunked for the Rules of the Game test.
