- The international career of Durkin started by accident... In a Euro 96 match between France and Bulgaria referee Dermot Gallagher got injured after 20 minutes and and as fourth official Durkin was asked to take charge of this match.
You could say that his appointment to the World Cup was also a kind of accident: he went when David Elleray couldn't go because of a possible job promotion (see Elleray) - Durkin always tried to stick to home cooking when he was abroad, because he didn't "have the most concrete of stomachs".
