Paolo Bertini started refereeing in the Italian Serie A in 1999. He hasn't officiated more than a few UEFA cup matches and (was) retired at the end of 2007. He was accused of being part of the Italian Scandal "Calciopoli".

SIM cards

He was more or less aquitted in 2006, but in 2007 Italian prosecutors discovered some worrying details from SIM cards used by Luciano Moggi, the match fixer and Juventus boss. The cards were bought in Switzerland. During the 24 hours preceding the match Juventus-A.C. Milan in 2004 there had been a series of 13 telephone calls between Moggi and Bertini, the referee of that match. They also discovered a series of 18 telephone calls between Bertini and Fabiani, the Messina manager. Bertini was suspended for a year and a half.

PAOLO BERTINI

  • Bertini was one of the referees questioned by the Italian authorities about the corruption scandal, June 2006. After two hours of interrogation it was concluded that he had no part in it (prosciolto). Still, the last word hasn't been said about it.
  • It was alleged that Paolo Bertini favoured Fiorentina over Bologna in a match played April 24th 2005. There was talk of him being friends with Innocenzo Mazzini (what's in a name, suspended for 4,5 years). Mazzini, former vice president of the Italian football federation, boasted in a telephone call that he was good friends with Bertini, the designated referee for the match. Bertini stated he had never spoken to Mazzini, who was not his friend but a friend of his father.
