FINAL AND PLAYER
- Latyshev in the middle, Leo Horn and Robert Davidson running the line. Czecholslovakia against Brazil and Leo Horn saw Djalma Santos handle the ball in his area. Horn flagged but Latyshev ignored it. Of course the Czechs, then 2-1 down, started protesting and by doing so they lost their concentration and lost the match.
In his book Leo Horn fluit Horn wonders if Latyshev maybe hadn't dared to give the Czechoslovakians a penalty. Before the match the Soviet referee had asked his assistants to closely watch the areas so he could concentrate on the rest of the field. Why he chose to ignore a blatant hands ball was unclear to Horn. - After the match, Latyshev managed to grab the match ball. The match ball of the final would be the best souvenir, in those days they used only one ball. But while Latyshev was walking off the field, Dutchman Leo Horn saw someone sneaking up to the Russian and kick the ball out from under his arm and running off with it through the mass of people that had gathered on the field. Horn, who had planned to take the ball himself presumed the thief would sell it to a certain Brazilian coffee millionaire who had had the ball from the 1958 final stolen from under Maurice Guigue's arm as well.
