Mustafa Kamel Mahmoud took charge of a match in the 1974 World Cup finals. He wasn't the first Egyptian to do so, that was Ali Kandil in 1966, also the first African official at the WC. He was an international ref from 1967 until the end of 1974. Mostafa Kamel died August 2004.

In fact when Mostafa started as an international referee he wasn't from Egypt but from the United Arab Republic, a short lived idea of president Gamal Nasser. The UAR, a union between Egypt and Syria, existed from !958 until 1961, when Syria seceded. Egypt officially kept the name UAR until 1971.
