A school teacher from Morocco, Mohammed Guezzaz started as a referee in 1997. Two years later he refereed in his first international match. He retired at the end of 2006.

Africa Cup

Mohammed led World Cup 2002 qualifiers as well as matches in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2002, 2004 and 2006.

Of course Guezzaz is famous for taking charge of one match in the World Cup Korea/Japan in 2002.

For World cup 2006 he was fourth official and a backup referee. In 2005 he refereed at the Club World Championship Cup in Japan.

SCHOOL TEACHER

  • At the end of the qualifier Zambia-Togo in Lome (Togo), Mohamed Guezzaz needed police protection after Zambia's footballers tried to attack him at the end of their 4-1 loss. Guezzaz gave the home side two penalties which sent Togo to the top of their group standings and severely dented Zambia's chances of qualifying for Germany 2006.
  • Guezzaz was also previously involved in decisions that were found controversial involving Tunisian team Esperance.
    In 2002, midfielder Hossam Abdelmonem from Egyptian club Zamalek was banned for three matches after attempting to attack Guezzaz, who has been accused of biased refereeing in favour of Esperance when they met Zamalek in the African Champions League. Esperance have a long history of being accused of trying to influence referees, as was evidenced by Kaizer Chiefs earlier this year when they lost in controversial circumstances in Tunis.
  • Guezzaz was the referee of the Africa Cup quarter-final match in 2006 between Cameroon and Ivory Coast. 24 penalties were needed to decide who would go on to the semis. Only Eto'o missed, his second not his first.
