- April 2010, after a series of mistakes (off-side goal by Drogba, a hands ball goal, no penalties awarded where they should have been and penalties awarded when they shouldn't) Dean was relegated to a lower level for a while.
- In 2006 he was replaced by Alan Wiley for the FA Cup final. Dean, who's home town is on the Mersey side, was not considered the right referee to be in charge of a final with Liverpool as one of the teams.
- In March 2006, Chelsea was fined £10,000 because their players acted in an "aggressive manner" towards Mike Dean after William Gallas was sent off at Fulham.
- Micheal Leslie Dean was suspended for three moths in 2005 because of his activities promoting a horse racing betting company called Arbitros. It was alleged that he used his status a well known referee to gain financial advantage in racing. One of the slogans used in the campaign was "Join Premiership referee, Mike Dean, in this great, new, exciting venture." English referees have to seek approval from the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMO) before they use their status for commercial purposes. Arbitros had no betting on football matches.
