YORK
- Matt Messias managed to get two penalty calls wrong in the FA Cup fifth round replay between Liverpool and Portsmouth in 2004. The first penalty was awarded for a nonexistent hands ball, the second for a correct and in fact masterful tackle. Matthew later admitted he had been wrong on both occasions.
- "The Professional Game Match Officials Limited announced that by mutual consent referee Matt Messias will cease to be a select group referee with effect from February 1, 2006," read a statement from the PGMOL.
"The company wishes to thank Matt for his excellent service to senior football for the last 13 years during which time he served on the FIFA International list as an assistant referee and as a referee."
In his penultimate top-flight match, Portsmouth's 1-1 draw with Newcastle in 2005 at Fratton Park, Messias was suspended for 14 days after "less than proficiently applying the laws of the game". The suspension related to his actions in incorrectly showing the yellow card twice to then-Portsmouth striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu.
(this information was copied from this online article on sportinglife.com) - According to an article on Wikipedia, Matt Messias will move to New Zealand with his family, at the end of 2008.
- Messias is a Christian (well, with a name like that ...). He even once more or less converted a football player, who wrote a book about it.
