- September 2004 Mark Halsey did something very uncommon for a referee: he came back on his own decision to award a penalty. Players' reactions from both sides (Arsenal and Fulham) made him realize he had made a mistake. To buy some time he went to his assistant who confirmed there had been no foul. Halsey stated that if none of the players had protested the penalty would have been awarded.
- There was some bad blood when he was seen drinking with Manchester City fans after their 1999 play-off final victory over Gillingham. Manchester equalised in the 5 minutes added time and went on to win on penalties. Halsey commented it meant nothing and that if he had to name a team he was a QPR fan.
- Halsey keeps himself fit during the season by training with Bolton.
- According to the Guardian Halsey may later suffer repetitive strain injury from his use of the play-on gesture.
