• Wilmes once wrote a piece about the rules he thought were important. He writes about getting to the stadium, about where to park the car, to think about possible traffic jams on the way and about to take 1,5 hours time to concentrate. At the start of the match, he says, he tries to find out the players' character and that he whistles for little things and takes good care about whether they keep the proper distance, throw-in according to the rules etc. Be firm!
  A ref shouldn't use any cliches when talking to players: they will always have an answer. Instead he should use his imagination, act a little, find out what works with this lot.
