For many years Greek Kyros Vassaras has been at the top. In spite of his experience and impressive career he missed the 2006 World Cup Finals in Germany because one of his assistants didn't pass the test. Kyros retired April 2009.

Apart from many Champions League and Uefa Cup matches, Kyros Vassaras officiated one match in the 2002 World Cup finals. He took charge of the Olympic final in 2004 in his own country, and not only of the 2005/2006 Champions League semi-final but also the one for 2006-2007.

Kyros Vassaras was selected for EURO 2008 in Austria/Switzerland where he took charge of 2 matches in the group stage.

2010

Vassaras was on the 54 member shortlist of candidates for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In March the news reached us that Vassaras suffered from back problems and he had to skip a World Cup qualifier, then a month later, he announced his retirement..
