On February 20, 2004 Kevin Blom refereed his first match in the Eredivisie (the top Dutch league). He received his FIFA badge a year later. When he is not on the field he educates young referees together with Pieter Vink

down

Kevin Blom was on his way up. A Premier Development Category referee since 2009, promoted to the Elite category at the start of the season 2010-2011, but at the start of season 2012-2013 he dropped out of favour (see below) and was demoted to the First Category. And his first match for season 2012/13 was a qualifier for the Europa League.

at home 2007

At home he was elected best referee in 2007 and he won the golden card (the voters are ex-professional football players) in 2008.

But that was then.

Scotland

For Blom the Euro 2012 qualifier Scotland vs Czech Republic must be a serious snag on the road to the top. The blond Dutchman received poor to very bad reviews on Worldreferee and not only by Scottish members, who saw their team's chances to reach the finals disappear. There was a penalty awarded in the last minute and one penalty not awarded. The Sunday Mail reported players stating that Blom had told them to "fuck off". (but this is a paper that started one article with "CRAIG LEVEIN last night blasted ropey ref Kevin Blom for allowing the cheating Czechs to con their way to a crucial point that all but kills off our Euro 2012 hopes.")
see more in the did-you-know section.

at home 2011

When Blom redcarded Kevin Strootman (PSV) in a match against Twente, no one, including both teams coaches and including Luuk De Jong who received the kick, understood why. In the media questions were asked about Blom's capabilities and all his earlier mistakes were reviewed. Dutch referee of the century Mario van der Ende tweeted Blom should visit a psychologist.

When he sent off more players in following matches every one of his decisions was scrutinized on tv and he reached a certain notoriety (although the red cards were rightly shown).

Did you know
DEMOTED

  • Aftre the Scotland qualifier mess-up, Blom got matches in the second division. Normal procedure according to the Dutch FA, all referees get to do their bit in the second division (which is called first division in Holland and is also named after a Belgian beer brand). But a week later all matches scheduled for Blom were assigned to someone else. Food for gossip.
  • In 2005 Blom was named sportsman of the year... in his home town, Gouda.
  • The Serbian ADO Den Haag player Aleksandar Rankovic threatened to kill Kevin Blom on January 19, 2007, in a match against AZ. Blom failed to award a penalty and the Serb told him 'When I see you in the city, I kill you'. Rankovic was banned for some matches afterwards.
  • Kevin Blom showed 3 red cards (2 directly) in the under-21 match for the European Championships between Scotland and Italy in 2005. The match ended in 2-2 but was forfeited and changed to 0-3 later on because Scotland had fielded an ineligible player
  • Blom says his strongest point is his fitness an his weakest point his lack of concentration sometimes.
  • Here he is in a commercial for some insurance company, he looks pretty cool though unlike his colleague Bas Nijhuis in the same ad

  • if there is such a thing as the glamourous life of referees, Blom likes to be included (he looks a bit tipsy with his bow tie askew)
