Because his brother (a youth referee) recommended it, Johny Ver Eecke at 16 decided to quit playing football and become a referee.
When he was 21 he reached a national level and at 30 he was in the !st league. He stopped in 2006, nationally and internationally, at 45.

Johny Ver Eecke works for the postal services and is coach of an amateur team. He also has a seat in the council of a town called Hulst.

The Belgian referee is well known for his humour and he used to talk a lot and joke with the players.

  • Johny Ver Eecke sent off 3 players from one team in his first ever national match. Before the match he overheard the coach of that team tell his players to play it rough since the ref was unexperienced.
  • Because of problems, the match North Korea - Japan had to be played on neutral ground without spectators and with a referee from a different federation: AFC chose Bangkok and Frank de Bleeckere. Johnny Ver Eecke was the fourth official.
    The Belgians were in Thailand for four days and Ver Eecke, who doesn't like to eat foreign food like rice, had brought a case full of waffles. When he ran out of them he finally found a place that served the other Belgian national food: Chips, (French) fries.
