Came to the United States in 1929 and played on a number of amateur teams in the Chicago area from 1930 to 1936 including Schwaben, Ulster United, Carpenters and Sloboda before getting involved in refereeing.

A FIFA certified referee from 1948 to 1963 he was a linesman at the 1948 Olympic Games in London and a referee at the 1955 Pan American Games in Mexico where he handled 10 games in 12 days. He also officiated at numerous international club fixtures around the world, 33 international games in all. First U.S. referee to receive FIFA’s coveted 'Special Award' for service in at least 20 international matches and extensive administrative work. Named Commissioner of the California Soccer Association-South in 1962. John was instrumental in getting the California Soccer Association affiliated with the United States Soccer Football Association and served on the team that created two state associations for California. USSFA vice president from 1967-74 and 1976-79.
