JOHN BLANKENSTEIN
- John Blankenstein believed a referee should adapt to the players and to the style of the country they were from. He strongly believed there should be room for improvisation, thus bending the rules a little bit.
- Blankenstein was the referee of the very last match of the East-German national team, a friendly a month before the country was abolished. The two goals of the match were scored by Matthias Sammer who went on to play for Germany. Think of it: a player who changed countries and National teams. Something that is/was then not really allowed anymore by FIFA.
