John Blankenstein used to wear very tight shorts and everybody knew, even before he came out, that he was gay. Next to being a top referee and, after his retirement, head of the referee committee, Blankenstein was active in the gay rights movement. He died in 2006 of a rare kidney decease.

not

John Blankenstein was a national referee from 1979 till 1996 and international from 1985 till 1995.

He took charge of the 1992 UEFA Cup final and was designated to do the 1994 Champions League final (Milan - Barcelona) but was replaced by Englishman Philip Don.

UEFA did not give a reason for the replacement. Maybe it was because Barcelona had a strong Dutch connection (Cruijff, Koeman) but Blankenstein himself said that probably Blatter did not like his shorts (nor his outspokeness).

Did you know
JOHN BLANKENSTEIN

  • John Blankenstein believed a referee should adapt to the players and to the style of the country they were from. He strongly believed there should be room for improvisation, thus bending the rules a little bit.
  • Blankenstein was the referee of the very last match of the East-German national team, a friendly a month before the country was abolished. The two goals of the match were scored by Matthias Sammer who went on to play for Germany. Think of it: a player who changed countries and National teams. Something that is/was then not really allowed anymore by FIFA.
