HELMUT KOHL

  • Ljubomir Barin, a Craot player's agent and match fixer for Bordeaux and Marseille, told the French magistrates when he finally got caught, he had given Helmut Kohl 310.000 French Francs to fix the Eurpean Cup match Marseille-AEK Athens. He put the money on Kohl's account on November 10, 1989. According to Barin, Kohl - a postal worker - had money problems. Barin managed to fix the return match by paying the Greek players, or some of them, through an intricate system of intermediaries.
This is from a book called The Fix by Declan Hill. Hill mixes up the first and the second match so we wonder how accurate all this is. He does have an exact date for the money transfer.
