Gratian Hemans Matovu was an international referee from 1964, but seemed to be mainly active in the 1970's. In 2006 he was still active in the referee committee in Tanzania.
He got his referee diploma in 1956 and became a first class ref in 1961. Three years later he received his FIFA badge. He took charge of more than a 1000 matches nationally and internationally there must have been some 30 matches in all.
Gratian Matuvu must really like the administrative side of it because the list of his jobs in football is long. And he has done some travelling as well, because not only has he been secretary of his local FA in, then, Tanganyika, treasurer, member and vice-presidnt of the Tanzanian FA (not all at once) and president of the referees association, but he has also been active in Kenya (treasurer) and Uganda (ref president).
- Note that he was 50 years old when he took charge of the two qualifiers for the 1978 World Cup.
