The first ever Asian referee to take charge of a match in the World Cup finals (1974), George - Govindahsamy - Suppiah started as a player for a Singaporean 1st division team called Rovers. One day he was asked by the club owner to referee a match and so it began. Suppiah died in 7. December 2012 due to diabetes.
