An Eton educated major with the Royal Engineers (Sappers) who fought in the Crimean war, Francis Marindin founded the Royal Engineers Football team, played 3 FA Cup finals and won one (1875). After he retired from the Army, he took charge of no less than 9 FA Cup finals between 1880 and 1890

Sir Francis was also president of the FA between 1874 and 1879, senior inspector of the railways and he helped develop London's new electrical lighting system.

Francis Marindin died in 1900.
