Fernando Gimenez Alvarez, former Philippine referee and American all-round soccer VIP, is one of the chosen few who received the FIFA Centennial Order of Merit. With this award he is up there with Pele, Stanley Rous, Franz Beckenbauer and Johan Cruijff, but also Henry Kissinger, just to name a few.
The FIFA Centennial Order of Merit is the highest award given by FIFA. Alvarez also received the FIFA International Referee Special Award (1973), the AFC Distinguished Service Award (1984), the Eddie Pearson Award in the USA (1999) and he was Athlete of the Year (1949).

General secretary of the Philippine Football Federation from 1966-1984, member of the AFC referee committee from 1966-1988, vice president of the AFC from 1978-1988, member on the FIFA International Board, member of the Referee's Committee for 12 years and a member of the Technical Committee for 10 years.
Director of the San Francisco Cup and International Youth Festival (1987-present), member of the USSF National Referee Committee, the Director of the USSF International Referee Exchange Program, a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, New York and member of the California Soccer Association North Hall of Fame (2002/2003), whatever those things may be.
Alvarez also had the time to enlist in the United States Merchant Marine (honorably discharged in 1947).
In 2009, at 82, he was California State Director of Assessment.
At College Alvarez played basketball and soccer. In the Philippines he has been captain of the national team.
