After suffering a serious knee injury, Dougie McDonald wanted to continue in football and so: he started refereeing.

He officiated his first international match in 1994 and earned his FIFA badge in 2000 and retired because of the age limit at the end of 2010.

Fondest memory

His fondest memory so far is the 2006 Scottish Cup Final. His strongest ambition is to referee in the Champions League - which he did in 2007, albeit in a qualifier - and to continue to referee at the highest level domestically.

Matches

See his palmares. He has been slowly climbing up in the UEFA Cup from qualifiers to group stage matches, but is seems that he has been overtaken by his colleague Craig Thomson in 2008.

McDonald is a UEFA category 2 referee.

Ay!

After Dougie McDonald awarded a penalty to Celtic in a match against Dundee United he changed his mind. He said and wrote in his report that it was his assistant Steven Craven who told him to come back on his decision. In fact it turned out to be McDonald himself who realized his mistake using Craven as an excuse. Craven resigned. After this incident the papers increased their criticism of the Scottish referees and it got so bad the referees decided to go on a weekend's strike in November 2010.

KNEE INJURY

  • McDonald hates players who try to get their opponents cautioned.
  • Dougie, as he is called most of the time even on official sites, likes to communicate with players, he thinks he is nearly always approachable.
  • Dougie prefers a nice Chablis over a beer.

  • McDonald was one of the first referees who took charge of a match with two extra assistants, making it a 6 referee match. It was in November 2008, a mini U19 tournament in Cyprus and the two extra men were referees Iain Brines and Callum Murray.
