Born in the town of Zaltbommel, son of a baker, Christiaan Groothoff (1878-1954) moved to Amsterdam to get an education. It was in the park (now called the Vondelpark) that he started playing football with friends. They formed teams by the way they held their caps on their heads. From these park teams famous ones were formed like Ajax and AFC.

OG

As a referee Christiaan Groothoff must have had his best year in 1912. He took charge of the gold medal match of the Olympic Games - then considered the most important tournament in the world (there was no World Cup yet and almost all players were amateur, but there was no age limit.

And there was the match in the consolation round between Germany and Tsarist Russia, won by the Germans with 16 - 0 with a staggering 10 goals by Gottfried Fuchs.

more

Groothoff's first match as a referee was in 1898, his last was in 1945, a career of 47 years.

But there were only 15 national team matches, for instance : England - France and Austria - England in 1908; England - Belgium and England - Denmark in 1911; Hungary - Austria in 1914, just before the war broke out.

1912

  • In 1920, Christiaan Groothoff went to the Olympic Games in Antwerp, as a journalist. He wrote articles about it and more thsn one was about Spain, a new team to enter the international stage. For most players and spectators Spanish football was something new. The Spaniards turned out to be rough but good, especially a large fellow called Belausteguigoitia. Also the Spanish fans turned out to be something else. They were loud and fanatical and tried to enter the field after their team scored a goal. All new for the (mostly) Northern Europeans.
