Baojie Sun, the most important Chinese referee in his time, has been taking charge of international matches since 2001. Asian Champions League and even a final of the Presidents Cup, a final by the way that featured the same teams Sun had refereed in the group stage.

Sun was on the the AFC Elite referee list in 2008. Sun retired at the end of 2010 because of his age, a rare thing for Chinese refs who usually get arrested for match fixing before their time is up.

  • In 2002 Baojie Sun was accused by a Shanghai newspaper of taking bribes. The paper alleged that the referee of the year in 2001 had taken money from the team Zhejiang Lvcheng. Sun denied angrily and threatened to sue the newspaper. Later the paper said the money could have been taken by an intermediary without being passed on to Sun.
