When Antonio Saldanha-Ribeiro went to the World Cup finals he had only two years experience as a FIFA ref. His international career is rather short for a World Cup ref.

WORLD CUP

  • Antonio Ribeiro went to a town called Lourenco Marques in Mozambique to take charge of three matches between Australia and Rhodesia in a stadium named after the Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar. Probably a very important happening in those days, for those countries. Australia went on to fight Israel (not many countries wanted to play them) for a place at the 1970 World Cup and lost.
Rhodesia - (no African country wanted to play them) - ceased to exist, Lourenco Marques was renamed Maputo and Salazar died a few days after the World Cup finals.
  • Actually Rhodesia wasn't welcome in Mexico for the World Cup finals, even if they had qualified.
