Anton Heleastanu was suspended in 2007 by the Romanian football federation. He lost his FIFA Badge in 2005 because his business connections with the president (and brother in law) Marius Stan of football team Otelul Galati.
Born in Iasi, Heleastanu started as a player and team captain with CFR (Cluj). In 1994 he started refereeing. In all he officiated 97 games in the Romanian Liga 1. He was FIFA referee from 2001 till the end of 2005.
Anton Helesteanu was a lawyer while being an active referee. After his retirement from refereeing he became a football executive.
- In 2006 a Romanian championship match between Jiul Petrosani and Rapid Bucharest was abandoned in the 76th minute after Anton Helesteanu sent off five Rapid players, including the goalkeeper. The five were red-carded for fouls that were hotly disputed by their teammates and supporters. It was 1-0 when the game was stopped.
