Rule 11

UEFA EURO 2008 group stage:
Netherlands - Italy, 3 - 0. Wankdorf, Bern, Switzerland, 2008-06-09

I looked it up: If a defending player steps behind his own goal line in order to place an opponent in an offside position, the referee shall allow play to continue and caution the defender for deliberately leaving the field of play without the referee's permission when the ball is next out of play. (fifa.com)

that
is what happened. The Italian goalie actually slammed his defender to the ground, who thought it might be convenient if he stayed there. The Dutch were as amazed as the rest of the stadium when the goal was allowed, but Frojdfeldt was right. Frojfeldt knows the rules. And his assistant as well. Funny was that no one on tv knew that rule. Not the reporter, neither did the guy who talks about tactics during the break, nor the players.

and
he was good. You could argue about some of his decisions, it was clear for instance that he wanted to start without cards, just by looking severely. I think it worked, it is not about punishment it is about creating a good match, and that was what he did. (For the Dutch.) Some decisions could have gone either way, it was areal fight sometimes, fair, passionate, but a fight.

match
I wonder what the Dutch team did, but Italy were completely lost.
