UEFA EURO 2008 QUALIFIERS :
England - Macedonia, 0 - 0. Old Trafford, Manchester, England, 2006-10-07

Without the heavy load of a World Cup finals match and the millions of people watching on his shoulders, Markus Merk is a great referee. If you forget all the missed crosses and wide passes and rushes going nowhere - this not (yet ) very important match between England and Macedonia was worth watching because of the referee.

right
Just look at him: always on the right spot, always first considering a possible advantage before whistling for a foul, and not whistling at all if not really nessecary. What a change from his performance in the 2006 World Cup finals.

match
The Macedonians are not all very skilled players, but they know how to defend and even got very close to scoring. The Macedonian midfield was as good as the English one. The second half was much better and England finally became something of a team at the end of the match.
