General assessment
He´s not the best in the World... he isn´t even the best in Germany ! I think he is really an over-rated referee.

No sparkle

FIFA WC 2006 group stage:
Brazil - Australia, 2 - 0. Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany, 2006-06-18

No sparkle yet in Brazil's play and not in Merk's performance either. He refereed a consistent match, but took no chances. He allowed for no physicality at all and stopped the game for even the slightest of pushes. No bad calls though, one offside which didn't look like it: Ronaldo through on goal, but it didn't matter because his shot landed in the hands of the Australian goalie.

gamble
Hiddink, coach of the Australian team, took a gamble in the second half and substituted two defenders for attackers. It didn't work. The Aussies had some great chances, but didn't get the ball in the back of the net. The game sped up and opened up and allowed the Brazilians to show some of the football that was expected of them. They scored twice in the end. Not a deserved win though.
