the substitution

UEFA EURO 2004 group stage:
Netherlands - Czech Republic, 2 - 3. Municipal, Aveiro, Portugal, 2004-06-19

The Dutch were playing well and were 2-1 ahead, when suddenly the Dutch coach Dick Advocaat substituted their best player Arjen Robben. In the Netherlands you only have to say : the substitution ("de wissel") and every one will know what you mean.

Advocaat
A not very popular man, Dick Advocaat, newspapers and tv-pundits went on about him all day during this tournament, which made the people in the country hating him. But after this match the opinion could change: the National Team played well and Arjen Robben - often injured or having problems with himself - was finally showing his brilliant moves, passing his opponents as if they weren't there. The Dutch scored two goals quickly in the first half, then a single Czech goal made the coach afraid it was going wrong and he substituted their best man.
At home through the open windows you could hear the people cry out from their living rooms: really? Is he insane?

Van Gelder
The players too didn't understand it. You could see how angry Robben was at Advocaat when he walked off the field. The team lost it's momentum and lost the match. After the match Advocaat was interviewed by tv's football expert/anchorman Jack van Gelder who started asking him why he took out Robben. The answer (he needed a stronger midfield against a team that was growing better and started to win most duels there) was not excepted and the interview ended in Van Gelder yelling at the National Team's coach. (oddly enough Van Gelder is still there and never had to apologize). Incited by the tv the Dutch were ready to lynch Advocaat who soon left the country (to for instance win the UEFA Cup with Zenit)
